Stories in the Wall

Hans Christian Andersen Remixed

What is Stories in the Wall?

A collaborative digital storytelling project between Arts Centre Melbourne and Victorian Primary and Secondary Schools.

How does it work?

In Term 2, 2014, Arts Centre Melbourne engaged playwright Ned Manning to make multiple visits to three selected Victorian Primary Schools - Elwood PS, St Andrews PS and Tullamarine PS. During these visits they deconstructed classic Hans Christian Andersen tales, and working in small groups, wrote new stories keeping within Andersen's moral or lesson based framework. The children scripted their stories as radio plays, then performed and recorded them at Arts Centre Melbourne's Digital Learning Hub.

In Term 3, 2014, 18 Secondary Students from across Victoria worked with Arts Centre Melbourne's Digital Education team to write original music and create original sound design for the recordings. A composer was partnered with a sound designer and assigned a story. Composers were free to score the piece using whatever styles, instrumentation or techniques they thought appropriate, while the sound designers were encouraged to consider not just the timing of sound effects with the voice, but audio effects, stereo placement and movement, and volume changes to enhance the storytelling.

Stories in the Wall Listening Booths are installed in Arts Centre Melbourne foyers from 10-17 November 2014 to coincide with Arts Centre Melbourne's presentation of Teatret Gruppe 38's promenade performance of Hans Christian, You Must Be An Angel.

Will it run again in 2015?

Yes. But instead of using Hans Christian Andersen stories for inspiration, we will be basing the storytelling around another great show playing at Arts Centre Melbourne in 2015 The Intergalactic Nemesis.
