Stories in the Wall

What is Stories in the Wall?

In Term 3 and 4, 2018, Arts Centre Melbourne engaged playwrights Dan Giovannoni, Amelia Evans, Jessica Bellamy, Rachel Perks and Morgan Rose to run workshops in five selected Victorian Primary Schools. Three of these schools were located in Melbourne – Penders Grove Primary in Thornbury, St. Bernadette's Primary in Sunshine North and Reservoir East Primary. This year Arts Centre Melbourne was thrilled to be able to expand the project to include regional Victoria, working with Ouyen P-12 College and Cardross Primary both located in the Mallee.

At each school upper primary students took part in 5 workshops with two playwrights. In the Melbourne region these were weekly workshops at each school. For the regional these were delivered through a combination of remote learning sessions and school visits.

During these workshops playwrights worked with students to develop original stories around the theme What Lies Beneath. Inspired by the underground location of Arts Centre Melbourne's theatres and treasures, students were asked to respond to an image from the Australian Performing Arts Collection asking the question What Lies Beneath? The answers to this question evolved into a wildly imaginative and diverse collection of characters, motivations and adventures. Students worked in groups to create their stories, and across the workshops turned them into radio play scripts. These were recorded at The Channel - Arts Centre Melbourne's participation venue and at mobile studios set up at the regional primary schools.

Once the plays were recorded they were given to emerging composers from Melbourne University's Bachelor of Interactive Composition who created original music and sound design for each story.

The Stories in the Wall installation is installed in the Arts Centre Melbourne foyer from 13 November to 3 December 2018, followed by a season at Ouyen Service Center from 5-11 December, and the Mildura Arts Centre from 13 – 31 December 2018.
